This was the scene Friday morning. The funny part is how quickly the fog's density changes. I say funny, but I probably mean disheartening. One minute it looks like it is clearing, and then it rolls back. This is the view looking South from the hospital. You might remember seeing Norton Sound covered in ice in previous pictures. It is still out there........somewhere...
This is a photo looking more Southeast, over the parking lot. It is very quiet normally. The fog adds to the silence.
The fog was starting to lighten up a little after work. Not much but some. You might remember the following pictures of 6th Ave. Snow one day.....
Gone the next morning.
Well the fog was there as well. If you notice the angled pole on the right side of the frame. You can see that I was a little farther East in the fog.
On a good day, Nome is a small, isolated town, in the great Northwest. Closer to Russia than it is to the rest of the United States. The fog adds to the isolation. You cannot really go sightseeing in the fog, so you have to find something to occupy your time. The local college. University of Alaska - Fairbanks, Northwest Campus offered a non-credit class in Glass bead making. It was a 5 hour course, and since I had the time, I decided to register. Working with glass was not as hard as I thought it might be. It will take some work to become proficient.
These are the results of my first attempts. I have learned you can not be in a hurry, when working with glass. You also have to work with both hands, and it takes some work to remember which object needs to be hot, and which needs to be cool.
Overall, the class was a success. I had fun. I learned something. If the fog continues, I may have something to occupy my time.
Now the best part of the day, was that the fog was lifting. It turned out to be windy and cold, but the sun finally came back out.
It may be hard to tell, from the photos, but the ice is disappearing. The wind was taking it out to sea. Hopefully it will be gone until October.
Week 8 is in the books.
