Well I write this on May 24, 2014. It has been a great week. Lots of sunshine this week. I had another roommate. This week it was Cameron French, from Idaho Falls. He was here to provide a dermatology clinic. He was provided with an ATV. Let's just say that CanAm makes some nice ATV's.
We started off by taking a trip to Anvil Mountain. We could make it most of the way on the 4-wheeler, but had to hoof it for the final ascent.
I was not smart enough to get a picture of the rock formation, that looks like an anvil, giving the mountain its name. I did get pictures of the "White Alice" station, that is a former early warning station for the U.S. I think more people know Anvil Mt for the structures behind me in these pictures.
The next picture is looking back toward Nome, from the top of the mountain. It is kind of hard to notice, but that is the fog coming in over the ocean, and part of Nome. It was kind of sad to not be able to get a clear picture of the ocean from up here. I guess that gives me a reason to return.
We did see some musk oxen on our walk up the mountain. They were a long way off.
If you look closely you can see them. On a side note, later this evening, or the next there was a mother bear and cubs spotted in the Anvil Mountain area. I would not have minded seeing her.(from this distance)So far on my trip these are the best pictures I have gotten of musk ox, but that was about to change.
These 2 musk ox decided to help me out, and welcome me to Nome.
Actually a 3rd had just crossed THE highway in front of us.
I am thinking musk ox vs ATV collision is not a good thing for either.
They were pretty docile, but you could tell they were getting nervous.
The report for the week was that the herd was numbering around 70 members.
